The house is a succession of simple traditional forms connected (the house itself) and disconnected (garage/workshop) to create an elongated hierarchical form which exploits the gradually sloping site. The house was built by local craftsmen under the supervision of our client, David Higgins.

St George, Preston

A new stone-built hall for parish and community use completed in 1999. The building was part of a scheme for the restoration and extension of St George’s Church in the centre of Preston. The church now has the facilities to act as an arts and cultural centre as well as a parish church.

Lanternhouse, Ulverston

1995-1998: Lanternhouse, Ulverston: Project won in competition. A new Arts Centre for Welfare State International. Built with Arts Council and Lottery support. Cost 1m. It includes a lecture theatre, workshop theatre, art gallery, cafe and living accommodation for visiting artists. RIBA National Award in 2000 and a Civic Trust Commendation in 2001.

St John’s Minster, Preston

The Minster Church of St. John the Evangelist. A pioneering scheme of major repairs, refurbishment and new accommodation opening the building to community, arts and cultural uses. For the Diocese of Blackburn, with English Heritage and Heritage Lottery support. Completed 2001 (£1.5m).
